Identification: Large size. Barrel-shaped body. Short legs. Massive head with a very broad muzzle.
Weight: Males +/- 1,800 kg (3,968 lbs), females +/- 1,500 kg (3,306 lbs)
Gestation: 7-8 months
Young: Single calf
Habitat: Requires sufficient water to allow submergence and a preference is shown for permanent waters with a sandy substrate. This includes rivers, dams and lakes.
Diet: Selective grazer only.
