Binomial Name: Phacochoerus africanus Identification: Pig-like appearance. Grey, sparsely-haired body. Wart-like lumps on face. Thin tail with dark tufted tip, held erect when running. Curved upward-pointing tusks on adults. Weight: Males +/- 80 kg (176 lbs), females +/- 60 kg (132 lbs) Gestation: 5-6 months Young: 2-3 piglets, but up to 8 Habitat: Savanna and open country, but also lightly wooded areas. Diet: Mostly short grasses and grass roots. When grazing, they usually kneel. They might browse occasionally, and also could rarely feed on animal matter. Red List Status: Least Concern |
