Common Name: Cape Porcupine
Binomial Name: Hystrix africaeaustralis
Identification: Unmistakable, with a body covering of long quills banded in black and white.
Weight: Males +/- 18 kg (40 lbs), females +/- 18 kg (40 lbs)
Gestation: 3 months
Young: Litters from 1-4 (usually 1-2)
Habitat: Wide range, but a preference for more broken country.
Diet: Roots, bulbs, tubers and the bark of trees, as well as a number of cultivated crops such as potatoes and pumpkins. It has also been recorded as eating from animal carcasses.
