South African Soul
Johannesburg - 2 nights
The Soweto Tour, a fully-guided trip deep into township culture, will allow you to experience this vibrant and lively part of Johannesburg. Highlights include Kliptown (where the Freedom Charter was drawn up), Vilakazi Street (Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu both had homes here), the Hector Pieterson Memorial site, the Regina Mundi church, and the mining hostels. You can also sample traditional African fare at one of the many “shebeens”, or have a beer at a local brewery. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Apartheid museum, acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum relating to 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. |
Walkers River Camp - 5 nights
Walkers is without a doubt one of the best private game reserves in the country. It is located adjacent to the Kruger National Park, and, as there are no fences between the reserves, animals can move freely throughout this huge conservation area. Your group will have exclusive use of this very comfortable riverside lodge, as well as the full-time services of an experienced ranger and a tracker. Game drives (at least 2 drives per day are included) are all conducted using open-topped 4x4 game viewing vehicles, which allows for very close up and personal animal interactions. You will be pampered and taken care of by the guides, and all meals, snacks and drinks are part of the package. |
Panorama Route (Graskop) - 3 nights
This part of the country is blessed with magnificent mountain scenery, as well as a host of other attractions. Highlights encompass the Blyde River Canyon (a boat trip inside the canyon will also be included), the Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window, and a visit to an authentic cultural village. Those with a more adventurous streak will not be forgotten, and the stay here can also include activities such as the Graskop Gorge Lift, the Big Swing, ziplining, the Long Tom Toboggan, hiking, and many others. There are a number of beautiful waterfalls in the area and many scenic drives, all incorporated within South Africa's largest forested area. If time allows, the group will also visit Jane Goodall's Chimp Eden. |
Dullstroom - 1 night
Dullstroom is a quaint and charming village nestled high in the mountains of Mpumalanga - in fact, with an altitude of 2100 meters (6890 feet) above sea level, it is the highest town in South Africa. It is best known for its crystal clear dams and rivers which are perfect for trout fishing, but other popular outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking, and an array of adventure sports. Numerous excellent restaurants, coffee shops, a craft-beer brewery, a world-renowned whiskey bar, and eclectic pubs can all be discovered in this beautiful little town. Dullstroom supports a significant arts community and is an escape for artists, writers and musicians, so there are a number of art and craft galleries scattered around the area. |
Clarens - 3 nights
The small town of Clarens is situated in the foothills of the Maloti Mountains, and is surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors formed by the orange, gold and ochre sandstone cliffs that abound throughout the area. It is one of the most picturesque spots in the country, and has justifiably become known as the "jewel of the Free State". The village is an artist's haven, and there are a plethora of art galleries and antique shops, as well as numerous restaurants and an excellent craft brewery. The magnificent Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located nearby, which offers incredible scenery, game viewing, and a number of walks and hikes. Adventure sports in the area include white water rafting, horse riding and abseiling. |
