Binomial Name: Pedetes capensis Identification: A true rodent, despite its name. Kangaroo-like appearance. Long, powerful hindlegs. Long, well-haired tail with a black tip. Ears and eyes are fairly large. Weight: Males +/- 3.5 kg (8 lbs), females +/- 3.5 kg (8 lbs) Gestation: 2-3 months Young: Single young Habitat: Compacted sandy soils with short vegetation cover. They will colonize sandy areas along riverbanks where these pass through unsuitable habitat. Diet: Grass, grass-roots and other plants. Cultivated crops. Red List Status: Least Concern |
